Adult Forum

First Presbyterian Church – Marshfield WI

After the church service, those who are interested are encouraged to pick up a cup of coffee or glass of juice and join us for ADULT FORUM. Years ago, it was set as a goal to have a time for discussion of a variety of topics of interest to the adults of the congregation but not necessarily have a Bible Study each Sunday.  Over the years a great variety of topics have been discussed with some more recent offerings including the history of the Belthar Confession, the development of the Brief Statement of Faith in 1991, the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, religious traditions of the Jehovah Witness and Episcopalian faiths as well as background on the use of T-coil hearing devices which can be installed in a church or other building, challenges of raising a child with Autism, health care issues of aging and health care reform.  The Green Team also presented excerpts from the film “The Dark Side of Chocolate” which is a documentary on the use of child labor in the harvesting and packaging of cocoa beans sent to different parts of the world to make the chocolate products we love to enjoy.

Throughout the year, on the second Sunday of the month, there are “talk back”[i] sessions with Pastor Kevin during which participants can ask questions about the service just ended, other services that were presented, choice of readings, sermon topic choices or other questions of concern. We recently had a very animated discussion on the traditions of communion we grew up with and how different churches offer communion during their services.

For a number of Sundays throughout the spring, a discussion on Old Testament stories will be facilitated by Patty Faber. A DVD showing a lecture/ discussion of the verses by Professor Amy-Jill Levine is viewed then the participants discuss their thoughts on her presentation. These have been very enlightening as Professor Levine does not offer any particular theology, just an objective idea of her thoughts on the verses and their meaning.

Feel free to come join us at any time. You do not have to commit to being present a particular number of Sundays. We do not meet during school vacation weekends or if there is a special meeting of the congregation.
